Masseter Reduction and TMJ
Slim a square jawline, reduce teeth grinding, and ease TMJ tension with masseter Botox. The same treatment, two different goals, depending on your face.
Causes and Treatment
The masseter is the powerful muscle at the angle of the jaw that closes the mouth. When it's overdeveloped, two things happen at once: the jawline looks more square (especially in patients with naturally bulky masseters), and the muscle works harder than necessary, which contributes to teeth grinding (bruxism), TMJ pain, and tension headaches.
Masseter Botox addresses both. A small dose of neuromodulator placed in the masseter muscle reduces its volume gradually over 4 to 8 weeks. The result: a softer V-shaped jawline and dramatic reduction in grinding and clenching for patients with bruxism. Effects last 4 to 6 months and the results compound: with consistent treatment, the muscle stays smaller and bruxism stays controlled.
This treatment is one of the highest-leverage things we do at Better. Patients consistently report it changed both how they look and how they feel, especially those who didn't realize how much jaw tension they were carrying.
Better Med Spa's Recommended Treatments
Masseter Botox is the primary treatment. We use the same neuromodulator as upper-face Botox, just in a much larger dose placed at a different depth.
Botox (Masseter)
The most-prescribed neuromodulator. Predictable, well-studied. The standard choice for masseter reduction at most practices and what most patients start with.
Dysport (Masseter)
Faster onset (2 to 5 days vs 7 to 14 for Botox). Sometimes used for patients who want results faster, or those who haven't responded as expected to Botox.
DAXXIFY (Masseter)
The longest-lasting neuromodulator (6 to 9 months). Especially useful for masseter treatment because the larger doses required can make duration matter even more.
Xeomin (Masseter)
A clean formulation with no surrounding proteins. Sometimes preferred for masseter patients who get treated frequently and want to reduce resistance risk.
First time? Most masseter patients start with Botox. Our New Patient Tox Special applies to masseter treatment if it's your first visit. Plan for results at 4 to 8 weeks, with maximum effect at month 3.
How to Choose Between Them
All four neuromodulators work for masseter. Pick by onset, duration, and personal history.
| If you want | Choose |
|---|---|
| First time, predictable results | Botox |
| Faster onset (2 to 5 days) | Dysport |
| Longest duration (6 to 9 months) | DAXXIFY |
| Resistance prevention, frequent treatment | Xeomin |
| Bruxism and grinding more than aesthetics | Botox or Xeomin (any work) |
| Maximum jawline slimming | Larger dose, typically Botox or DAXXIFY |
Masseter doses are larger than upper-face Botox doses. A typical masseter treatment uses 20 to 30 units per side. The cost is correspondingly higher than a glabella or forehead treatment, but the results last longer.
Realistic timeline: visible muscle reduction begins at 4 to 6 weeks. Maximum effect is at 8 to 12 weeks. Results last 4 to 6 months for most patients on Botox, longer on DAXXIFY. With consistent treatment over 12 to 18 months, the muscle stays smaller even between sessions and bruxism becomes much less frequent.
What to Expect at Better Med Spa
Masseter consultations at Better start with palpation of the muscle at rest and when clenched. We grade the muscle's bulk, evaluate jawline width, ask about grinding and TMJ symptoms, and recommend a starting dose calibrated to your specific anatomy.
The injection itself takes 5 to 10 minutes. You'll feel a series of small pinches in the muscle. Most patients describe it as easily tolerable. There's no downtime. You can return to work or your day immediately.
Dr. Brechner supervises all neuromodulator protocols. Our injectors are trained in advanced facial anatomy, including the masseter's depth and innervation, which matters for safety and outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will masseter Botox change how I chew or talk?
No, when dosed correctly. We dose the masseter to reduce bulk and overactivity, not to paralyze it. You'll still chew and talk normally. The only thing that changes is the muscle works less hard than it used to.
How long do results last?
4 to 6 months on Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin. 6 to 9 months on DAXXIFY. With consistent treatment over 12 to 18 months, the muscle gradually stays smaller between sessions, and many patients can extend their visits to every 8 to 12 months.
Will it help my teeth grinding (bruxism)?
Yes, dramatically for most patients. Masseter Botox is one of the most effective treatments for bruxism. Most patients notice less grinding within 2 to 3 weeks and dramatic reduction within 6 weeks. Many also report fewer tension headaches.
Most patients describe the injections as a series of small pinches. We use the smallest needles available and can apply topical numbing cream on request. The whole appointment is typically under 30 minutes including the consultation.
Is masseter Botox covered by insurance for TMJ?
Sometimes, when prescribed for TMJ disorder by a dentist or physician. Coverage varies. Better treats masseter as a cosmetic and dual-purpose treatment; we don't bill insurance directly, but we can provide documentation for reimbursement claims.
How much does masseter Botox cost in Chicago?
Masseter doses are larger than upper-face doses (typically 20 to 30 units per side). Pricing scales with units used. Better's pricing is per unit. Series and membership discounts apply. See our Specials.
