Rosacea and Facial Redness
Calm chronic redness, flushing, and visible vessels with light therapy, K-Beauty barrier protocols, and trigger management. Rosacea isn't curable, but it's very manageable.
Causes and Treatment
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition affecting an estimated 16 million Americans, mostly in their 30s through 60s. The four primary patterns:
- Erythematotelangiectatic: persistent flushing, visible blood vessels, easy reactivity. The most common pattern.
- Papulopustular: red bumps and pustules that look like acne but follow a different pattern.
- Phymatous: thickened skin (most often on the nose). Less common.
- Ocular: red, irritated eyes. Often missed.
Rosacea isn't curable, but the visible signs are very manageable with the right combination of in-office treatments, trigger identification, and barrier-supportive skincare. Better's approach centers on three things: reducing the existing redness with light, preventing future flares with K-Beauty barrier care, and identifying your specific triggers.
Better Med Spa's Recommended Treatments
Better treats rosacea with four primary tools, almost always combined. Your consultation grades severity and identifies your triggers.
BBL (BroadBand Light) for Vessels
Light therapy that selectively targets the visible blood vessels (telangiectasias) and underlying redness. The gold standard for visible facial vessels and persistent flushing. Series of 3 to 5 sessions.
DPL Photofacial
A gentler photofacial appropriate for rosacea-prone skin that can't tolerate full-strength BBL. Calms inflammation while reducing redness gradually.
Glass Skin Facial (Barrier Repair)
K-Beauty informed barrier-repair facial that calms inflammation and rebuilds skin tolerance. Foundational maintenance for rosacea-prone skin. Used between in-office light treatments.
Personalized Chemical Peel (Mild)
A custom-blended low-strength peel that addresses post-rosacea pigmentation and texture issues without inflaming the rosacea itself. Used selectively when skin is stable.
In an active flare? Don't start with light therapy. We will use a Glass Skin Facial to calm the inflammation first, identify what triggered the flare, then schedule BBL or DPL once your skin is stable. Trying to treat through a flare typically makes things worse.
How to Choose Between Them
Match treatment to your rosacea pattern and current state.
| If you want | Choose |
|---|---|
| Visible cheek vessels and persistent redness | BBL series of 3 to 5 |
| Sensitive skin that can't tolerate BBL | DPL Photofacial series |
| Active flare or reactive skin | Glass Skin Facial first to stabilize |
| Maintenance between flares | Glass Skin Facial monthly |
| Post-rosacea pigmentation | Mild Personalized Peel + brightening |
| Comprehensive long-term plan | BBL series + monthly Glass Skin Facial |
The single biggest variable in rosacea management is consistency. The patients who do best are not those who get the most aggressive treatments, but those who treat consistently (one BBL or DPL every 3 to 6 months for vessels, monthly Glass Skin Facial for barrier maintenance) and identify their triggers (alcohol, spicy food, sun, heat, stress).
Realistic expectations: 80% of patients see significant reduction in visible vessels and persistent redness with a BBL series. Rosacea will not be cured, and flares will still happen with strong triggers, but the baseline state of your skin can be dramatically calmer.
What to Expect at Better Med Spa
Rosacea consultations at Better start with a 15-minute skin assessment under high-resolution imaging to map vessel density, redness pattern, and any post-flare pigmentation. We discuss your trigger history, current routine, and any prescription medications you're using.
BBL and DPL sessions take 30 to 60 minutes with no numbing required. Expect mild flushing for a few hours and slight darkening of vessels for 5 to 7 days as they fade. Glass Skin Facials run 60 to 90 minutes with no downtime.
Dr. Brechner supervises all rosacea protocols. Our team is trained in K-Beauty informed approaches that prioritize barrier health, which is critical for rosacea-prone skin.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can rosacea be cured?
No, rosacea is a chronic condition. But the visible signs (redness, vessels, flushing) can be dramatically reduced with the right combination of in-office treatments and trigger management. Most patients can keep flares minimal with consistent care.
Is BBL safe for rosacea?
For most rosacea patients, yes, BBL is highly effective and safe. We modify intensity based on skin tone and current state. For very reactive or actively flaring skin, we start with DPL or stabilize with Glass Skin Facials before introducing BBL.
What are the most common rosacea triggers?
Alcohol (especially red wine), spicy food, hot beverages, sun exposure, extreme temperature changes, stress, certain skincare products (alcohol-based toners, retinoids, harsh acids), and exercise heat. We will help you identify your specific pattern at consultation.
Most patients describe the injections as a series of small pinches. We use the smallest needles available and can apply topical numbing cream on request. The whole appointment is typically under 30 minutes including the consultation.
How many sessions will I need?
BBL series for rosacea: typically 3 to 5 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart, then maintenance every 6 to 12 months. Glass Skin Facials: monthly maintenance is the sweet spot.
How much does rosacea treatment cost in Chicago?
BBL is priced per session. DPL Photofacial starts at approximately $308 per session. Glass Skin Facial starts at approximately $176 per session. Series and Facial Membership pricing reduce per-session cost. See our Specials and Memberships.
