Active Acne and Breakouts
Calm active breakouts with light therapy, K-Beauty informed facials, and topical protocols designed for acne-prone skin. We address the root cause, not just the visible blemish.
Causes and Treatment
Adult acne is rarely the same condition as teenage acne. By your 20s, 30s, and 40s, the drivers shift toward hormones, stress, gut health, skincare overload, and barrier inflammation. The pimples look similar, but the right treatment plan is fundamentally different.
Better's approach to active acne combines four tracks:
- Bacterial reduction through Forever Clear BBL light therapy, which kills P. acnes bacteria.
- Inflammation control through K-Beauty barrier-first facials and gentle peels.
- Hormonal evaluation when breakout patterns suggest a hormonal driver (jawline acne, premenstrual flares, post-pill flare-ups).
- Topical and systemic management through customized skincare regimens.
The biggest mistake we see in adult acne patients arriving from other practices is over-treating. Aggressive resurfacing, drying acne washes, and high-strength benzoyl peroxide can damage the barrier and make breakouts worse. Better's protocol is gentler and barrier-focused, which often works better and faster than the harsher approach.
Better Med Spa's Recommended Treatments
Most patients combine 2 to 3 treatments depending on severity and pattern. Your consultation maps the right starting protocol.
Forever Clear BBL
A three-step BBL light therapy targeting P. acnes bacteria, inflammation, and post-acne pigmentation in a single visit. Most effective for active inflammatory acne.
Acne Fighter Facial
A targeted facial designed specifically for acne-prone skin. Includes deep cleansing, extractions where appropriate, antibacterial actives, and barrier-supportive recovery. Modified for active versus healing skin.
Personalized Chemical Peel
A custom-blended salicylic, glycolic, or lactic acid peel calibrated for your specific acne severity and skin tone. Reduces oil production, exfoliates clogged pores, and fades post-acne marks.
Glass Skin Facial (Barrier Repair)
K-Beauty informed facial that calms inflammation, restores the barrier, and reduces reactivity. Counter-intuitively, often the most effective treatment for breakouts driven by overuse of acne products.
Worried about scarring? Our priority for active acne patients is calming the breakout first to prevent new scars. Once the skin is stable, we layer in RF Microneedling to address any existing scars. Treating scars while breakouts continue produces more scars, not fewer.
How to Choose Between Them
Match the protocol to your acne pattern.
| If you want | Choose |
|---|---|
| Active inflammatory or cystic acne | Forever Clear BBL series |
| Whiteheads and blackheads (comedonal) | Acne Fighter Facial + Chemical Peel |
| Oily skin with mixed acne | Personalized Chemical Peel series |
| Sensitive or post-Accutane skin | Glass Skin Facial (barrier repair) |
| Hormonal pattern (jawline, cycle) | Hormone Panel + topical plan |
| Active acne plus existing scars | Calm acne first, then RF Microneedling |
Adult acne almost always responds best to a layered approach. Forever Clear BBL handles the bacterial and inflammatory side. The Acne Fighter Facial or Personalized Chemical Peel manages clogged pores and texture. The Glass Skin Facial repairs the barrier between sessions. Most patients see meaningful improvement within 4 to 8 weeks of consistent treatment.
If your breakouts follow a hormonal pattern (worse the week before your period, jawline distribution, persistent into your 30s and 40s) we recommend a Comprehensive Hormone Panel as part of the workup. Topical-only protocols won't fix a systemic driver.
What to Expect at Better Med Spa
Acne consultations at Better start with a 10-minute skin assessment, a review of your breakout history and current routine, and a discussion of any hormonal or stress factors. We almost always recommend simplifying your existing routine before adding new treatments.
A typical Forever Clear BBL session takes 30 to 45 minutes with no numbing required. Acne Fighter Facials and chemical peels run 60 to 90 minutes. Most treatments have minimal downtime: mild redness for a few hours, possibly some flaking from peels.
Dr. Brechner supervises all acne protocols. Our team is trained in K-Beauty informed approaches that prioritize barrier health, which often works better for adult acne than the aggressive Western approach.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I treat active acne and acne scars at the same time?
Usually no. Treating scars (with RF Microneedling, lasers, or aggressive peels) while breakouts are active produces new scars on top of old ones. Better's protocol is to calm active acne first using Forever Clear BBL and barrier-supportive facials. Once skin is stable, we layer in scar treatment.
How long until I see results?
Forever Clear BBL: improvement starts after 1 to 2 sessions, with full results after a series of 4 to 6 weekly sessions. Chemical peels: improvement after 2 to 3 sessions spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart. Most patients see meaningful improvement within 4 to 8 weeks of consistent treatment.
Should I stop my acne products before treatment?
We will review your current routine at consultation and often recommend simplifying. Many patients arrive over-treating with multiple acids, retinoids, and benzoyl peroxide, which damages the barrier. We taper aggressive products before adding professional treatments to avoid compounding inflammation.
Most patients describe the injections as a series of small pinches. We use the smallest needles available and can apply topical numbing cream on request. The whole appointment is typically under 30 minutes including the consultation.
Is BBL safe for darker skin tones?
BBL works by targeting pigment, which means caution is required for Fitzpatrick types IV to VI. We assess each patient's skin tone and adjust intensity. For darker skin, we may modify the protocol or use the Glass Skin Facial and chemical peel approach instead.
What about Accutane and prescription acne medications?
Many patients combine professional treatments with prescription regimens. We coordinate around your dermatologist's plan. Patients on or recently off Accutane need a gentler approach (typically Glass Skin Facial only, no peels or BBL until skin recovers fully).
