Postpartum Weight Loss
Lose pregnancy weight safely with physician-supervised GLP-1 protocols, designed around new-mom realities. Telehealth available across Illinois.
Causes and Treatment
Postpartum weight loss is genuinely harder than typical weight loss. Sleep deprivation, stress, hormonal shifts, and the demands of caring for a new baby compound. Most new mothers want to feel like themselves again but don't have the bandwidth for aggressive diet plans or daily gym time.
GLP-1 medications (semaglutide, tirzepatide) make postpartum weight loss dramatically more achievable for the right patients. The medications reduce appetite and hunger noise, which makes it possible to eat well and lose weight without the willpower demands that postpartum life makes impossible.
Important: GLP-1s are not safe during breastfeeding. Better's protocol is to wait until breastfeeding ends, then start gradually with conservative dosing while supporting the body through what it's been through.
Better Med Spa's Recommended Treatments
Better treats postpartum weight loss with four primary tools, after breastfeeding ends.
GLP-1 Weight Consultation
30-minute consultation to map your goals, breastfeeding status, current weight, and any postpartum considerations. Required first step before any prescription.
Semaglutide
The original GLP-1 weight loss medication. Predictable, well-studied, the right starting point for most postpartum patients.
Tirzepatide
Dual-action GLP-1 + GIP receptor agonist. Stronger appetite suppression than semaglutide. Useful for patients who plateaued or have larger weight loss goals.
Microdose Semaglutide / Tirzepatide
Lower-dose protocols for cost-conscious patients or those wanting gentler titration. Particularly useful for postpartum patients whose bodies may be more sensitive.
Still breastfeeding? GLP-1 medications are not recommended during breastfeeding. We discuss alternatives (lifestyle, supportive supplements, IV nutrition) until breastfeeding ends, then transition to GLP-1 when safe.
How to Choose Between Them
Match the protocol to your situation.
| If you want | Choose |
|---|---|
| Done breastfeeding, ready to start | GLP-1 Consultation + Semaglutide |
| Larger weight goal | Tirzepatide |
| Cost-conscious or gentler titration | Microdose protocol |
| Plateaued on existing GLP-1 | Switch to Tirzepatide |
| Live outside Chicago | Telehealth GLP-1 program |
| Combined with body contouring | GLP-1 first, then Sentient Sculpt |
Postpartum patients often have additional considerations: thyroid changes (sometimes diagnosed only postpartum), iron deficiency from delivery, and hormonal shifts that affect weight. Better's protocol typically includes a Comprehensive Hormone Panel as part of the initial workup to rule out treatable contributors before starting GLP-1.
Realistic timeline: GLP-1 results compound over 12 to 18 months. Most patients reach their target weight around month 12 to 14, then enter a maintenance phase.
What to Expect at Better Med Spa
Postpartum weight loss consultations at Better start with a 30-minute discussion of your delivery, breastfeeding status, current weight, weight history, and any postpartum symptoms. We may recommend a Hormone Panel as a first step.
If you're a candidate, prescriptions are sent to a partner compounding pharmacy. Most patients self-inject once weekly. We schedule monthly check-ins for the first 3 months, then quarterly. Telehealth visits are available across Illinois.
Dr. Brechner supervises every program.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take GLP-1 while breastfeeding?
No. GLP-1 medications are not recommended during breastfeeding. Wait until breastfeeding ends before starting. We discuss alternatives during the breastfeeding period.
When can I start postpartum?
Most patients can start GLP-1 once breastfeeding has ended and they're cleared for it medically. Earliest start is typically 6 to 12 months postpartum, but this is highly individual.
Will it affect my milk supply if I start while still breastfeeding?
This isn't well-studied and is the reason GLP-1 isn't recommended during breastfeeding. We don't prescribe GLP-1 to breastfeeding patients.
Most patients describe the injections as a series of small pinches. We use the smallest needles available and can apply topical numbing cream on request. The whole appointment is typically under 30 minutes including the consultation.
How much weight will I lose?
Average is 15% on semaglutide and 20% on tirzepatide over 12 to 18 months. Postpartum patients with hormone-related weight retention sometimes see even better results because the medication addresses the appetite-driven side of the equation.
How much does postpartum GLP-1 cost in Chicago?
Compounded GLP-1 programs start in the mid-hundreds per month. Brand-name through insurance can be much lower. Microdose protocols are even more affordable. We discuss pricing at consultation. See our Specials.
