BBL + MOXI is a dual-platform laser and light treatment that corrects skin tone and texture simultaneously. BroadBand Light (BBL) uses intense pulsed light to target brown spots, redness, and sun damage at the surface, while MOXI delivers fractional 1927 nm laser energy to stimulate collagen production and improve texture, pore size, and fine lines. Both are FDA-cleared technologies manufactured by Sciton. When performed together, they address the full spectrum of skin quality concerns in a single session with one shared recovery period. At Better Med Spa & Wellness in Lincoln Park, Chicago, BBL + MOXI is one of our most-requested treatments for patients who want meaningful skin correction without the extended downtime of fully ablative lasers. Every treatment is customized to your skin type and goals by our clinical team under the supervision of Medical Director Dr. Brett Brechner, DO.
The combination works because BBL and MOXI target different layers and different concerns, which means the results compound rather than overlap.
BBL (BroadBand Light) delivers pulses of broad-spectrum light that are absorbed by melanin (brown pigment) and hemoglobin (red pigment) in the skin. When the light energy is absorbed, it breaks up clusters of pigmentation and constricts dilated blood vessels. Over the following days, dark spots rise to the surface, flake off, and reveal clearer skin underneath. BBL is particularly effective for sun damage, age spots, freckles, rosacea, and visible broken capillaries.
MOXI (1927 nm thulium laser) works differently. It creates thousands of microscopic treatment zones in the upper layers of the skin, each one triggering your body's natural healing response. As those micro-zones heal, your skin produces fresh collagen and new, healthy cells replace damaged ones. The result is smoother texture, smaller pores, and a reduction in fine lines and superficial scarring.
When your provider performs BBL first and follows immediately with MOXI, the light-based correction and laser resurfacing happen in the same visit. You get tone correction and texture refinement with only one round of healing, which is why this combination has become a go-to protocol for comprehensive skin rejuvenation at clinics nationwide.
This combination is versatile. Here are the most common concerns our Chicago patients bring in:
BBL + MOXI is a strong fit if you:
This treatment works well across a range of skin types. Fitzpatrick skin types I through III are the most common candidates, but BBL + MOXI can be safely customized for some Fitzpatrick IV patients with appropriate settings. Your provider will evaluate your skin during your consultation and let you know whether this combination is the right approach or whether a different protocol would serve you better.
Not sure if this is the right treatment for you? If your primary concerns are deep wrinkles, significant volume loss, or severe acne scarring, a different treatment (or a combination approach) might be more effective. Treatments like RF microneedling or dermal fillers address those concerns at a structural level that BBL + MOXI is not designed for.
Before your appointment: Avoid direct sun exposure and self-tanners for at least two weeks prior. Discontinue retinoids and exfoliating acids for about a week. Your provider will give you a complete prep checklist at your consultation.
During treatment: The session typically takes 30 to 45 minutes for a full face. Your provider applies a topical numbing cream about 20 minutes before starting. BBL feels like a series of warm snaps against the skin. MOXI feels like prickling heat. Most patients rate the discomfort as mild to moderate, around a 3-4 out of 10.
Days 1-2: Mild redness and warmth, similar to a moderate sunburn. Most patients are comfortable going about their day. Mineral sunscreen is essential.
Days 3-5: This is where you see the magic happen. Brown spots darken and rise to the surface. MOXI creates tiny pinpoint dots on the skin (called MENDs, or microscopic epidermal necrotic debris) that give the skin a sandpaper-like texture. This is your old, damaged skin literally shedding itself.
Days 5-7: The rough texture flakes off, and underneath you will find noticeably brighter, smoother, more even skin. Most patients are fully "social" by day 5. Full results continue to develop over 4 to 6 weeks as new collagen builds.
Long-term: A published clinical study found that patients who received combined BBL + MOXI treatment showed significant improvement in brown spot reduction, with results maintaining at follow-up periods ranging from several weeks to nearly 20 months. For optimal ongoing results, most providers recommend 2-3 initial sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart, followed by annual or biannual maintenance.
Wondering if BBL + MOXI is the right fit for your skin?
Every person's skin is different, and the best way to know whether this combination will get you where you want to be is a one-on-one consultation. Your provider will evaluate your skin, discuss your goals, and map out a treatment plan that makes sense for your concerns and your budget. No pressure, no obligation.

There are dozens of clinics in Chicago offering some version of BBL, MOXI, or both. Here is what makes our approach different.
The right machines, not just any machines. We use the Sciton BBL HERO and MOXI platforms, which are the current-generation systems from the company that pioneered BroadBand Light technology. Not every clinic invests in the latest hardware. The newer systems deliver more consistent energy output, which translates to better results and more precise treatments.
Experienced providers who treat this combination regularly. BBL + MOXI is not a "set it and forget it" laser. The energy levels, pass counts, and treatment order need to be tailored to each patient's skin type, concerns, and tolerance. Our clinical team has performed thousands of laser treatments and understands the nuances that make the difference between a good result and a great one.
A clinic built around compounding results. BBL + MOXI pairs well with other treatments we offer, including chemical peels for deeper texture work, medical-grade skincare for at-home maintenance, and neurotoxins or fillers for patients addressing multiple concerns at once. Our team thinks in treatment plans, not isolated appointments.
Real results you can see before you book. We have a before-and-after gallery with real patient photos from our Lincoln Park clinic. We also carry a 4.8-star average across 130+ verified reviews from patients across Chicago's North Side, including Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Gold Coast, Old Town, and Bucktown.
If you are comparing options, here is a quick framework:
BBL + MOXI vs. IPL (Photofacial) alone: IPL treats pigmentation and redness but does not resurface the skin. If your only concern is brown spots, standalone BBL may be sufficient. But if you also want to improve texture, pores, and fine lines, the MOXI addition makes a significant difference.
BBL + MOXI vs. Chemical Peels: Chemical peels remove damaged skin from the outside in. MOXI works from the inside out by creating controlled micro-injuries that trigger collagen production. For surface-level concerns (dullness, mild texture), a peel may be enough. For deeper texture correction and long-term collagen building, BBL + MOXI goes further.
BBL + MOXI vs. RF Microneedling: RF microneedling excels at skin tightening, deep texture correction, and acne scarring. BBL + MOXI is better for pigmentation, redness, and overall skin tone. Some patients benefit from both, and our team can help you figure out the right sequence.
BBL + MOXI vs. Fully Ablative Lasers (CO2, Erbium): Ablative lasers deliver more dramatic single-session results but come with 1-2 weeks of serious downtime and higher risk. BBL + MOXI offers meaningful correction with significantly less downtime, making it the preferred choice for patients who cannot take extended time away from work or social commitments.
If you have been noticing sun damage, uneven tone, or rough texture and want to do something meaningful about it, BBL + MOXI is worth a conversation. Our team will evaluate your skin, walk you through what to expect, and give you an honest recommendation, whether that is this treatment or something else entirely.
