Skin Texture and Photoaging
Smooth rough texture, fine lines, and photoaging with resurfacing lasers, microneedling, and brightening protocols. We address damage and prevention together.
Causes and Treatment
Photoaging is the cumulative damage from years of UV exposure. It shows up as rough texture, fine lines, uneven tone, sun spots, broken capillaries, and visible loss of skin quality. Photoaging accelerates around the mid-30s for most patients and accumulates faster than most people realize.
Better's approach to texture and photoaging works on multiple layers simultaneously:
- Surface resurfacing with Moxi laser or chemical peels to smooth texture and fade pigment.
- Deeper collagen rebuild with RF microneedling for tone and firmness.
- Pigment work with BBL or DPL for sun spots and uneven tone.
- Prevention going forward with daily SPF and topical regimens.
Most patients combine 2 to 3 modalities over a 6 to 12 month plan. The realistic outcome is significantly smoother, more even skin that looks years younger, plus a maintenance plan to keep it that way.
Better Med Spa's Recommended Treatments
Better treats texture and photoaging with four primary tools, almost always combined.
Moxi Laser
Non-ablative resurfacing laser that smooths surface texture, fades sun damage, and improves overall tone. 3 to 5 days of sandpaper feel as the skin sheds.
RF Microneedling
Microneedling with RF energy at depth. Stimulates collagen rebuilding for firmness and tone improvement. Effective for moderate to severe photoaging.
BBL + Moxi Combo
Two-in-one treatment that addresses both pigment (BBL) and texture (Moxi) in a single visit. The premium option for comprehensive photoaging.
Personalized Chemical Peel
Custom-blended medium-depth peel for surface texture and pigment. Useful as a series in between heavier laser treatments or for budget-friendly maintenance.
SPF is non-negotiable. No texture or photoaging treatment will hold without daily SPF. We will review your sun protection at consultation and recommend a sunscreen that fits your skin. Without it, you're paying to undo damage you'll redo.
How to Choose Between Them
Match the treatment to your photoaging severity.
| If you want | Choose |
|---|---|
| Mild photoaging, low downtime | Moxi laser series |
| Moderate to advanced photoaging | RF Microneedling series of 3 to 4 |
| Both texture and pigmentation | BBL + Moxi combo |
| Mild surface texture, budget | Chemical peel series |
| Prejuvenation in your 30s | Annual Moxi + monthly Glass Skin |
| Maximum correction | RF Microneedling + BBL combo |
Photoaging treatment compounds. The patients who get the strongest long-term results are those who layer modalities and treat consistently. A typical plan: an aggressive series in year one (3 to 4 RF Microneedling + 2 to 3 BBL/Moxi), then maintenance every 6 to 12 months thereafter.
Realistic timeline: initial improvement at 4 to 6 weeks, continued improvement for 3 to 6 months as collagen rebuilds. Treat over a 6 to 12 month arc, not a single visit.
What to Expect at Better Med Spa
Texture consultations at Better start with a high-resolution skin analysis to map texture, pigment distribution, and laxity. We grade severity by zone and recommend a phased plan rather than a single treatment.
Moxi sessions: 30 to 45 minutes with topical numbing, 3 to 5 days of sandpaper texture as skin sheds. RF Microneedling: 60 to 90 minutes with numbing, 24 to 48 hours of redness, 5 to 7 days of mild flaking. BBL + Moxi combo: 60 to 90 minutes with the same downtime as each individual treatment.
Dr. Brechner supervises all skin tightening and resurfacing protocols.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between Moxi and BBL?
Moxi is a non-ablative laser that resurfaces texture (the bumps, fine lines, and rough surface). BBL is a light treatment that targets pigment (sun spots, redness, vessels). Most patients have both kinds of damage and combine the two.
How many sessions will I need?
Moxi: 3 to 4 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart. RF Microneedling: 3 to 4 sessions. BBL: 3 to 5 sessions. Plan a 6-month treatment arc with monthly maintenance afterward.
Is this safe for darker skin tones?
RF Microneedling is the safest option for Fitzpatrick types IV to VI because the energy bypasses melanin. Moxi can be used with caution. We modify or avoid BBL for darker skin tones.
Most patients describe the injections as a series of small pinches. We use the smallest needles available and can apply topical numbing cream on request. The whole appointment is typically under 30 minutes including the consultation.
What is the realistic outcome?
Significant smoothing of texture, fading of sun spots, and a younger-looking surface. Most patients notice their makeup looks better, their skin reflects light more evenly, and they wear less foundation.
How much does texture treatment cost in Chicago?
Moxi and BBL are priced per session. RF Microneedling starts at approximately $556 per session. BBL + Moxi combo is priced as a single comprehensive session. Series and Membership pricing reduce per-session cost. See our Specials.
